What to Do + Eat in Surat Thani |

(ภาษาไทยด้านล่างนะค้า) You all have heard about Ko Samui, Ko Pha Ngan, Angthong National Park, and even the Rajjaprapha Dam of Surat Thani. But what about the town of Surat Thani itself that is the very municipal seat of the province? The administrative core, the place of the locals, the one with the least to do with flocks of tourism?

The town of Surat Thani is the last stop on our way back to Bangkok. This province has over 100 islands within its administrative territory, and also their foods are all excellent and popular the country over. This time, we stayed for two days to explore the deliciousness and the cruise along the Tapi Tributaries.

Vlog EP 6 – WHAT TO DO + EAT IN SURAT THANI

1.  Keo Pla เกี๊ยวปลา(click the link for map) – This place is the real deal and it is the whole reason we stopped and spent nights at Surat Thani. I have a thing for fishball noodles and fish wonton and all things Chinese noodles with clear broth. This place is open from 8 am onward until just about noon when things run out. Order a bowl (special with extra broth if you like the soup) and one side of extra fish rolls here for a hearty breakfast.

2. Keo Pla Je Yong (Thanon Don Nok) เกี๊ยวปลาเจ๊ย้ง ถนนดอนนก (click the link for map) – I put this place in as an option in case you can’t make it to the first one which is open and closed early (from 8 a.m. until noon or an hour after). This noodle and fish wonton place is open from late afternoon onwards. For me, this place is not bad, but everything was just too salty for me. The soup was passable, but I love their rolled fish (seen below) the most.

3. Khai Dao ไข่ดาว(click the link for map) – This is how Surat Thani does Western-style greasy breakfasts. With local twists like garlic pork, garlic sausages, and so on. There are also steaming bowl of congee and fried goodies such as Chinese doughs, fried rice, and sweet toasts.

4. Yok Kheng ยกเข่ง (click the link for map) – Yok Kheng is an epitome of Surat Thani hearty lunch and Thai desserts. Their specialities are ‘Long Tong’ โล่งโต้ง which is essentially noodles with spare ribs (see the video below) with assortments of tofu, eggs, and crispy stuff. The base taste is mild and sweet, and still, local people need extra sugar, hence the sugary presence on the table to taste. I am ok with this, but my favourite items at this place are their superlative Thai desserts – mango sticky rice, Thai desserts ladled with thick and salty coconut cream. Heaven.

5. Lucky Restaurant (click the link for map) – Tried and true Southern food place where locals go. We were there for an early dinner and found the place full on a weekday evening. A great sign. Turned out that their foods are quite nice, no-frills, big portions, and yes, reasonably priced. A great combination. Huge menu, too. Suitable for family with picky eaters. 😀
