Prasat Hin Phanom Rung + Prasat Hin Muang Tam, Buriram |

(TH/EN) The latest bucket list I have created contains things that I would never wish to see maybe 5 years back. Instead of big cities and Instagram-hyped destinations, my list has centuries-old stone sanctuaries, forests, national parks, hiking trails, and more subdued things. Age certainly has something to do with it.

Above: Prasat Hin Khao Phanom Rung was built in an east-west orientation. It gets the full blast of sunlight during the sunrise and sunset.

Our recent 9-day trip to southern Isan felt like an archaeological adventure. First, we went to Prasat Hin Sadok Kok Thom in Sa Kaeo, ate a lot of Vietnamese food, and then we went to Surin and now Buriram. Our highlights here are the Prasat Hin Khao Phanom Rung and Prasat Hin Muang Tam in the Chaloem Phra Kiat District, which is about 60 kilometres south of Buriram’s city centre.

Above: Above this eastside entrance to the main sanctum is perhaps Thailand’s most famous lintel, the Narai Bantomsin Lintel, repatriated after a long saga from the Art Institute of Chicago back in 1988.

The highway between Buriram centre and Chaloem Phra Kiat District is two-way, hence a bit tough to drive, and it took us slightly over an hour the day we went to explore the city. They were having the Buriram Marathon 2023 on that day, and the roads were being barricaded. But generally, it was quite inconvenient if you planned to visit Khao Phanom Rung early in the day, say at 8 a.m. when they were open, to avoid the crowds.

Like most ancient stone castles in this area, Prasat Hin Khao Phnom Rung is built in an east-west orientation, with its entrance facing east, the auspicious direction according to ancient Brahman beliefs. Scientifically speaking, this is how the stone castle gets the full blast of the sun in both directions: sunrise in the east and sunset in the west. However, something even more amazing happens here every year, and we call it the “Solar Phenomenon of Prasat Hin Khao Phanom Rung,” which occurs when the sunlight beams through the castle’s total of 15 gates at a certain moment. This phenomenon happens four times a year, and the dates of the event are calculated based on the ancient solar calendar. And this year, the dates are the following:

1st phenomenon: Sunset, 5 – 7 March 2023, at about 18:15 hours.

2nd phenomenon: Sunrise, 3 – 5 April 2023, at about 06:03 hours.

3rd phenomenon: Sunrise, 8 – 10 September 2023, at about 05:57 hours.

4th phenomenon: Sunset, 5 – 7 October 2023, at about 17:55 hours.

Above: From the main Prasat looking back to the eastside long arcade that makes this place so spectacular. Prasat Hin Khao Phanom Rung has two entrances, front and back. The front entrance requires a lot of step-climbing, but you’ll get this view as the reward. But for those not so keen on climbing, the parking at the back, with a small fee, can be more accessible.

Apart from the solar phenomenon, Prasat Hin Khao Phanom Rung is also home to two repatriated lintels. The first one—the much-reported Narai Bantomsin lintel—was repatriated from the Art Institute of Chicago back in 1988. Back then, we called it the “Narai Bantonsin Lintel Affair,” for it spurred national awareness about artifact thievery. There was a song written to stir up the movement. With all that, this is perhaps the most famous lintel in our kingdom.

Above: Prasat Hin Muang Tam nearby is also stunning. Smaller, but set amidst a big wild park. Buy a bundle ticket for cheaper access to both places.

Apart from the Narai Bantomsin Lintel, which is installed on the eastside entrance of the main sanctuary, the Museum of Prasat Hin Khao Phanom Rung is also home to another repatriated lintel: the Prasat Nong Hong Lintel, also native of Buriram, returned from the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco in 2021.

Above: The two repatriated lintels of the year 2017, yours truly not included. On my right is the Prasat Nong Hong Lintel, also a native of Buriram; on my left is a lintel at Prasat Khao Lon in Sa Kaeo. The first is on display at Prasat Hin Khao Phanom Rung’s Museum, and the second at Sadok Kok Thom Museum in Sa Kaeo.

Repatriation of artifacts has been happening a lot in recent years. The world view of visitors to western museums, many filled with looted artifacts from countries they colonized or disrupted one way or another, had also changed. The realization that many artifacts should not be where they are and should, in fact, be returned to their native countries is becoming a more accepted worldview. Read this recent NYT article about the changing worldviews regarding looted collections here.

Above: The Khmer-style Som Tam.

Buriram, like many Thai lower northeastern provinces, carries the ancient influences of the Khmer. At one pitstop where we had lunch, on the menu there was ‘Som Tam Khmer,’ and my curious mind ordered a plate. Turned out that this variation of Som Tam has sliced fresh ginger and pork crisps in addition to the regular papaya salad we come to know and love. Normally, a plate of Khmer Som Tam would also contain Pla Ra, the fermented fish a staple condiment in Isan dishes, but because I don’t eat Pla Ra, our Khmer Som Tam was just a hybrid of Bangkok Som Tam plus the aforementioned ingredients. Not that it was unsavory, I was just not familiar with the taste. I’d just call that a new experience.
