Sa Kaeo Trip, Prasat Hin Sadok Kok Thom and Delicious Vietnamese Food |

(TH/EN) Here’s a trait that many travellers seem to catch when making plans for their next journeys: the attempt to connect the dots. Recently, for the both of us, we headed east and northeast to complete the journey through the lower Isan we started years earlier at Prasat Hin Phimai in Korat or Nakhon Ratchasima.

Thailand’s east, from the province of Sa Kaeo all the way up to the northeast: Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram, Surin, etc., is riddled with ancient stone castles, or Prasat Hin. These ancient treasures date back as far as the year 2463 B.E., making many of our historic monuments and temples seem modern in comparison. Wat Arun, or the Temple of Dawn, for example, was built in the Ayutthaya Era, which began almost 300 years later, with its current structure the result of a major renovation that wasn’t completed until the year 1851.

Aranyaprathet in Sa Kaeo is our first stop this time, and we have only two missions. First: Eat as much of their local Vietnamese food as possible. Second: Visit this Prasat Sadok Kok Thom in Amphur Khok Sung, about 35 kilometers north of Aranyaprathet, where major Thai-Cambodia border controls operate. Both missions were happily accomplished, and we were particularly impressed with Prasat Hin Sadok Kok Thom and the whole trip. We think it is really worth the journey.

Above: ‘Sirindhorn’ – the inscription of Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, Princess Royal, and Princess Debaratana Rajasuda who made visits here first before the restoration back in 1991, and second at the completion in 2010.

The best time to visit any Prasat Hin in Thailand’s east and northeast is the earliest in the day you can manage. We were there as the first visitors (8 am) when the sunlight was still soft with the cool breezes of January aplenty. Found in heaps of ruins back in 1992, it took the Fine Arts Department 20 years to reconstruct this temple, using anastylosis techniques that employ, as much as possible, the original elements of the ruins in the reconstructions.

Prasat Hin Sadok Kok Thom is small in comparison to other Prasat Hins in the area. But it has all the elements and ornamental structures that you’d expect from an ancient temple. This place has two sanctuaries: the outer and the inner, both linked by long, laterite-paved causeways. And the place is shady, with loads of leafy trees, critters, and birds. We took our time walking through their surroundings as well. Very peaceful and beautiful.

On our way back, we stopped by their information centre, where the stories of the restoration as well as the timeline of this Prasat Hin and more are presented along with many artifacts, among them the recently repatriated lintel of Prasat Khao Lon in Ta Phraya District, not too far from here.

Sa Kaeo is where Vietnamese foods are a delicious staple. The Association of Vietnamese People in Aranyaprathet is located on the main street, where we had our meals. We ate at two restaurants and enjoyed them both: Amsun (trendy, beautiful dishes, but dark and with no parking) and Yai Taam (on the same road but more local in their presentations, heartier in portions, and with parking space inside their premises). We stayed at the Velo Hotel which is decent and quiet, although a bit dusty. 😀

  • Chooo Cafe
